Zinoco is the acronym chosen by British Steel (UK) << Zinc no corrosion>> for the new rail used in very aggressive environments such as: coastlines, high humidity tunnel, level crossings, third rails etc., where corrosion is the main cause of the frequent replacement of traditional rails.
The new track "Zinoco" of 216 meters long is protected by a zinc coating carried out with the Thermal Galvanizing spray applied entirely on the foot and on the stem, parts most exposed to the attack of corrosion pitting, wear and section loss,(only the head is uncovered for easy welding and installation).
The track has a duration 5 times greater than the traditional ones and the zinc coating may be easily punctured and cut.
Zinoco offers double protection to rail: barrier, isolating it from the external environment, and sacrificial (or active) because the zinc anode is sacrificed being oxidizes at a slower speed equal to 1/20 than that of the underlying iron.
More, in case of coating damage, Zinc ions flow from the anode (Zinoco) and protect the exposed portion of the rail (cathode) while providing excellent protection even against stray currents.
